About Us
The African American Writers and Artists is a cultural
organization established in 1981, for the purpose of providing a forum and
creative outlet for writers and artists seeking to further their artistic
career goals. Since that beginning, AAW&A has broadened as a community
resource, to sponsor a variety of cultural, social and educational activities,
i.e. conferences, writing workshops, visual exhibitions and performances – at
schools K-12, colleges and universities, bookstore, galleries, theaters,
television, coffee houses, etc.
Perhaps
the most gratifying commitment of AAWA is its accomplishments in serving the
community through our youth, working with and encouraging the development of
their talents, and also as an alternative to involvement in destructive
behavior. Members of AAWA conduct art, writing and storytelling workshops in
schools, boys & Girls Clubs, Recreation Centers, as well as at the Girls
Rehabilitation Facility at Juvenile Hall – (The Butterfly Has Wings Program)
The
commitment of AAWA is to contribute to the goals of the City Arts Plan,
established through the San Diego Commission Arts & Culture, targeting the
arts and culture for tourists, the overall community and beyond, as well as its
membership.
